Weiner Pleads Guilty to Federal Sexting Charge

Former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner is crying in court as he apologizes to the 15-year-old girl with whom he exchanged sexually explicit texts. As part of his plea deal, he has agreed not to appeal any sentence of 27 months or less, Reuters says. "I apologize to the teenage girl, whom I mistreated so badly".

Federal authorities said that Weiner started communicating with the teen in January 2016 through online text and video chat applications, sending her sexually explicit images and asking her to engage in sexual conduct, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY. "I knew that was morally wrong".

Weiner wept as he read a prepared statement to the court admitting that he "compulsively sought" women for "sexual and non-sexual communication" which has had "devastating consequences" to him and his family.

Weiner admitted that between January and March of past year, he used online messaging and video chat applications to communicate with a minor girl he knew to be 15.

The plea, which will be filed in the Southern District of NY, comes almost six years after Weiner, once considered a rising star of the Democratic Party, resigned from Congress after tweeting lewd images.

Weiner, 52, will plead guilty to a charge of distributing obscenities to a minor, and prosecutors will recommend a prison sentence of about two years, the sources said. The Daily Mail reported she said he sent her numerous photos, one of him in a pool and at least one bare-chested.

Weiner said his "destructive impulses" have ruined his life, and said he has hit "rock bottom".

He launched an unsuccessful bid to become mayor of New York City in 2013, but was defeated in the Democratic primaries by current mayor Bill de Blasio.

Weiner will now have to resister as a sex offender and could go to prison.

It was during the investigation that the FBI seized Weiner's electronic devices, including a laptop computer on which agents found a trove of emails to his estranged wife, Huma Abedin, a top aide to Clinton.

Weiner was released on bail and will be sentenced on September 8.

"And yet I remained in denial as the world around me fell apart". Days before the November presidential election, now-former FBI director James Comey told Congress about the FBI investigation into emails between Clinton and her aides, The Times reported previous year. Clinton blamed her election loss to Donald Trump partly on Comey's action.

Weiner resigned from Congress in 2011 after he was caught lying to the media about his propensity to send sexting messages over Twitter.

Weiner also claimed at the time that he was "likely" the subject of a hoax.
