In this photo taken April 20, 2017, White House Communications Director Mike Dubke arrives in the East Room of the White House in Washington.

Dubke, 47, had been a behind the scenes player, who helped manage the White House communications strategy, including the aftermath of President Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey.

Sources told ABC News that on May 15, three days before he resigned, Dubke, along with press secretary Sean Spicer and principal deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, met with President Trump.

Mr Michael Dubke, the White House communications director, has announced he is resigning, as United States President Donald Trump weighs a broader shake-up of his staff in the face of multiple investigations.

Trump tweeted on Tuesday that "Russian officials must be laughing at the USA & how a lame excuse for why the Dems lost the election has taken over the Fake News".

He resigned on May 18 but offered to stay on his post until the end of the president's first foreign trip, ABC News has learned.

Dubke's last day on the job has not been determined.

"It has also been my distinct pleasure to work side-by-side, day-by-day with the staff of the communications and press departments".

Conway said Dubke "has expressed his desire to leave the White House and made very clear that he would see through the president's global trip".

"Mike will assist with the transition and be a strong advocate for the president and the president's policies moving forward", he said. Previously, Dubke served as a partner for the political advertising group Crossroads Media, which describes itself as "the premier Republican media services firm".

Dubke had originally replaced Jason Miller, who declined to accept the the White House job shortly after he was tapped to lead the communications office in December.

But it remains unclear whether the president might envision them working inside the White House or in outside roles.

Senior adviser Kellyanne Conway told Fox News the White House will continue to bring in Cabinet secretaries and other top officials to handle news briefings on topics in their patch.

Trump will also take more questions directly from the media, Axios reported.

Among those who have been caught up in the probes is Mr Jared Kushner, the President's son-in-law and senior adviser, who reportedly explored the possibility of setting up a secret communication channel to Moscow.
