The man accused of killing two men during an anti-Muslim rant against two girls on board a train in the U.S. city of Portland appeared in court shouting slogans and defending his act as "patriotism".

The suspect, Jeremy Joseph Christian, a 35-year-old convicted felon, faces charges including aggravated murder, attempted murder, intimidation and being a felon in possession of a restricted weapon.

We live in a country where the people who most feel like free speech is "under attack" are willing to violently attack people, while the people who actually use their words are attacked for them. "You got no safe place", Christian said as he was led into his arraignment hearing.

"He said, 'Tell them, I want everybody to know, I want everybody on the train to know, I love them, '" she said. Taliesin Namkai-Meche, 23, and Ricky Best, 53, intervened and were fatally stabbed.

However, three men riding the same train tried to defend the women but Christian pulled a knife and stabbed all three men, killing two and leaving a third hospitalized.

The man charged in Friday's TriMet stabbings made his court appearance Tuesday.

His felony convictions - for robbery and kidnapping - came in 2002, state corrections department records show.
