Brodey, Bubic have a blast in Stanford regional victory

Cal State Fullerton (34-21) made the NCAA baseball tournament as an at-large team and received the No. 2 seed in the Stanford regional in pairings announced Monday.

Starting pitcher Connor Seabold scattered eight hits and two runs with eight strikeouts before retiring after seven innings for the Titans. At that point, it was 3-0 Stanford, and the game was all but over - Sacramento State hadn't won a game all season in which Dillon had allowed three or more earned runs, and Stanford was 25-1 this season when leading after three innings.

Hunter Cullen had three hits, including a homer and a double, to lead the Titans.

Singles from Brock Hale and David Clawson gave BYU two runners with one out in the fifth and Favero delivered a double to score the first run of the game for the Cougars.

"That's a huge morale booster right off the bat", Seabold said. Dillon Persinger went 4 for 5 with three runs scored and Hank LoForte went 3 for 5 with three RBI. Fullerton opened its season by taking two of three from Stanford at Goodwin Field.

Bubic struck out five of his first eight hitters as he tied his career-high with 11 punchouts against no walks in a career-high 8.0 innings of work. "Honestly, I just didn't think we pitched very well". That's what you go out to do, that's what we prepare for.

A Klein sacrifice fly in the fourth gave Stanford another run before sloppy defense led to two more runs for Stanford in the sixth and seventh, with a runner scoring all the way from second on wild pitches in both instances. "We know what it means to dig ourselves out of a hole and we've done it a few times".

"We're good at it", BYU sophomore first baseman Colton Shaver said on the post-game radio show.

John Gavin (2-2, 4.74) will start for the Titans on Friday. Stanford has a 29-14 all-time record against Sacramento State however the last meeting was 2009 so it was before the Christiansen turnaround.

Of course, Seabold wasn't too shabby himself for Cal State Fullerton in the earlier game. The Cougars must win 4 games in the next 2 days to advance to Super Regionals.
