Chris Woakes out of Champions Trophy with side strain

Root's two off Mortaza took him to a 10th ODI hundred in 115 balls with six fours.

England were on the receiving end of the previous highest chase in trophy history, a loss in 2013 to Sri Lanka, who made 297-3.

England were rarely troubled during their run-chase and Root, England's recently-appointed Test captain, said: "We are a (one-day) side that are getting better at it (chasing totals in excess of 300)".

That was in his right leg, and his subsequent side strain is on the other side of his body.

Mushfiqur Rahim too played an exceptional knock but was dismissed immediately after Tamim, thus turning the match in England's favour.

"After Tamim got out, Mushfiqur fell the next ball", he said.

That is exactly what happened after the home team lost out-of-form opener Jason Roy in the third over.

Hales led their partnership, scoring freely in front of the wicket. Roy has now scored just 35 runs in his last six one-day innings for England.

Confirmation Woakes would not bowl again while his injury was being reassessed came as no surprise, and England were left having to fiddle his overs from elsewhere.

By this stage Root was well poised to reach three figures despite struggling after injuring his calf running between the wickets.

Around the country, many people fell silent and bowed their heads at 11 a.m. for a minute in tribute to the bombing victims. Eventually, airport officials escorted the man off the flight amid the passengers' angry reactions saying " Lock him up ".

Root also suffered an injury scare when he damaged his calf early in his innings but he made light of the problem to post his highest one-day worldwide score.

Roy looked tentative in his eight-ball innings, edging two of his first four deliveries into his pads, then poking a thick edge just short of a close-range fielder off a shot away from his body.

He went to a 48-ball fifty by driving part-time off-spinner Joe Root for four.

Victory came at a price, though, for the bookies' title favourite.

England captain Eoin Morgan said the side injury suffered by all-rounder Chris Woakes was a major concern after his team crushed Bangladesh by eight wickets in the opening game of the Champions Trophy on Thursday. "But yes, he would definitely be a loss if he couldn't play".

"I think we are 20 to 30 runs short, especially on that sort of wicket", ESPNcricinfo quoted Mortaza as saying. "They adapted to the longer boundary pretty well, and to wicket - it was a really good wicket to bat on".

That was the cue for Tamim and the diminutive Mushfiqur to take charge. But after Tamim's dismissal in the 45 over at 261, the Bangladesh batsmen failed to explode and could only manage 305 for six.

The host nation kicked of their ICC Champions trophy with a comfortable 8-wicket victory over Bangladesh at the Oval in south London.

But with England needing to win their two remaining group matches against New Zealand on Tuesday and Australia the following Saturday to guarantee a place in the semi-finals, coach Trevor Bayliss is unlikely to stomach too many more failures.

Bangladesh has the Australians on Monday.
