Special Counsel Robert Mueller is now overseeing the federal investigation into the Trump campaign's alleged ties to Russian Federation.

Mueller's team is expected to include Andrew Weissmann, a longtime DOJ and FBI veteran who helped spearhead the government's prosecutions involving Enron and multiple Mafia crime families, according to two sources who are closely tracking the unfolding investigation. Working in the U.S. Attorney's office in the eastern district of New York, Weissmann tried more than 25 cases involving members of the Genovese, Colombo and Gambino crime families. He later joined and ran the Enron Task Force.

In May, Trump fired Comey as the Federal Bureau of Investigation reportedly ramped up its probe into Russia's election interference and possible collusion between Trump's campaign and Moscow.

The Associated Press has learned of Flynn's cooperation that was the first signal that he and the Senate panel have found common ground. Whoever Trump appoints will require Senate approval, and winning that could prove hard, as both Democrats and Republicans will probably push for a person who could resist the White House's influence. President Trump fired Mr. Comey earlier this month; some are saying it was to impede the investigation.

Trump's statements, both reported and on camera, lead one to fairly conclude that Trump's decision to fire Comey involved the investigation of his own campaign.
