"Top Gun" followed Cruise's Maverick, a student of The Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School whose reckless attitude and cocky demeanor put him at odds with the other pilots. The movie also stars Kelly McGillis, Meg Ryan, Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards.

Ellison said at the time: "There is an fantastic role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick".

In the movie, Cruise plays a cocky aspiring pilot who falls in love with the lovely instructor Charlie Blackwood, played by McGillis.

Tom Cruise confirmed a sequel to his 1986 hit Top Gun is nearly ready for takeoff and declared that filming would start soon.
