EU Steps Up Cooperation With China in Fight Against Climate Change - Tusk

PARIS, June 2 US cities, states and businesses can fulfil commitments made by the United States under the Paris climate change agreement even though the USA has withdrawn from the pact, former NY mayor Michael Bloomberg said in Paris.

He added that China, Russia and India had confirmed their commitment to it.

The pact was agreed upon by more than 150 countries a year and a half ago.

The daily quoted Christiana Figueres, a top former United Nations climate official, as saying: "If the not going to be with them there, shoulder to shoulder as they used to be, well then China, could be the leader".

President Donald Trump said he was elected to represent Pittsburgh, not Paris, as he withdrew the United States from the Paris Agreement on Thursday.

"I made the U.K.'s position clear to President Trump last week at the G-7 meeting, as did the other G-7 leaders, and I made the position clear to President Trump last night", May said Friday.

There was a mix of dismay and anger across the world.

"While funding from governments remains central to our work, this kind of support is crucial for the work of the Secretariat to assist nations in their efforts to implement their commitments under the Paris Climate Change Agreement", Patricia Espinosa, executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, said in response to the billionaire's offer.

The increase in US production is neutralizing the efforts of the OPEC cartel and other major oil-producing nations, like Russian Federation, which are limiting their output in the hope of supporting prices.

Germany's Merkel, a pastor's daughter who is usually intensely private about her faith, said the accord was needed "to preserve our Creation".

The Justice Department will take the first legal steps in the "next several weeks" and the U.S. will immediately halt contributions to the UN Green Climate Fund, Pruitt said.

Following Trump's formal announcement Thursday, Macron posted a video on his official Twitter account, in which he pledged to "make our planet great again".

France "corrects" video In an unusual move, France's foreign ministry on Friday issued a pointed fact-check of Trump's claims about the UN's Paris climate agreement.

Obama was a driving force in the agreement and had committed to his country curbing carbon emissions by up to 28 per cent by 2025. As has been noted several places, there was not a single question about climate change in any of 2016's three presidential debates, with the only mention voluntarily raised by Hillary Clinton. He said the United States decision to leave the Paris Agreement was a "big mistake".

"Because this is not only the right thing to do, it is the smart thing to do, and those that will be betting on the implementation of the Paris Agreement, on the green economy, will be the ones that have a leading role in the economy of the 21st century", he said. "Global warming is an expensive hoax!".

"Well, it was a policy decision", Tillerson told reporters at the State Department.

Irish Environmental Network's Michael Ewing warned that if the climate keeps changing as it is, there will be a drastic effect on the world.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, former CEO of Exxon Mobil Corp, had supported staying in the pact.

The meeting will end with a joint statement pledging full implementation of the Paris deal, committing China and the European Union to cutting back on fossil fuels, developing more green technology and helping raise $100 billion a year by 2020 to help poorer countries reduce their emissions.

US oil production has already been increasing in recent months since the price of crude came off lows past year, making expensive shale oil extraction more economically viable. "Industry must now lead and not depend on government".

Eighty-seven United States mayors, who say they represent 40 million Americans, have also committed to uphold the Paris commitments, intensify efforts to meet climate goals and increase investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency.
