Miss. State wins 4 games in 2 days to reach super regional

In front of 4,237 in attendance at Peter Taylor Park, the Golden Eagles took down South Alabama 8-3 Sunday afternoon, which means they'll play the victor of an elimination game between Mississippi State and the Jaguars Sunday night.

LeeMarcus Boyd extended USM's lead to 5-1 with a solo blast in the fourth before Cody Brown pulled the Diamond Dogs back within one in their next at bat with a three-run homer to right off Sandlin.

Mississippi State (40-25) survived four straight elimination games, inching past Southern Miss 8-6 to win the Hattiesburg Regional Championship and advance to the Super Regionals. Trailing 1-0 in the third, Hunter Stovall hit a two-run shot over the billboard beyond the left field wall. "I'd call him more of a competitor than a baseball player, because with what he does, it's really awesome just how he keeps his head".

The play kept the game scoreless and allowed MSU to seize control with a five-run third en route to a 7-3 victory. "They played a complete game".

"Just mixing it up and trying not to throw a whole lot of fastballs after the first few innings", Braley said.

Mississippi State starter Denver McQuary (3-3) pitched into the fifth, leaving after a leadoff walk to Davis. Self got out of a jam in the 8th to keep MSU in the lead, and while he did load the bases in the 9th, he managed to keep UIC from reaching home.

The Golden Eagles threatened after Slater singled to lead off the eighth inning.

Brown was 3-for-4 with a walk on Sunday after going 2-for-4 with an RBI triple vs.

Brown, Gridley, Mangum, Hunter Stovall and Jacob Billingsley were all selected to the All-Regional Team. Plumlee allowed one run on two hits and a walk with five strikeouts in four innings to earn his first save of the year.

"Everything about this day and everything about this game tonight, it just summarizes who we are as a team", head coach Andy Cannizaro said.
