Trump's climate loss is a huge gain for China

The vast majority of scientists believe that global warming - bringing with it sharp changes in climate patterns - is mainly the result of human activities including power generation, transport, agriculture and industry. If the older industrialized countries caused the problem, it seems reasonable to ask them to do the most to fix it.

Mr Trump, in keeping with a campaign promise to protect American jobs, announced in Washington he will withdraw the USA from the landmark 2015 global agreement to fight climate change. New and younger leaders such as Canada's Justin Trudeau and France's Emmanuel Macron stepping up to take on both Mr Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin means the global order is changing.

He know "the U.S. has to be responsible for it and that's what we're going to do", said Nikki Haley. "I can get back to you". But Scott Pruitt, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), passed up five chances to say whether Trump subscribed to such mainstream scientific belief.

United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley said in interviews broadcast Sunday that Trump "believes the climate is changing", partly because of pollution.

Little said he would be making climate change a priority in his talks with Tillerson.

Fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina advanced to the French Open quarterfinals by beating Croatian qualifier Petra Martic 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Nishikori will now try to repeat his US Open success against Andy Murray when he faces the world number one on Wednesday.

Pelosi said climate change is "the challenge to this generation" and her "flagship issue".

At no point was Zinke able to shed light on Trump's climate change views. When pressed about Trump's beliefs, advisors Gary Cohn and Kellyanne Conway told journalists to "ask him". Trump "knows that it's changing and that the U.S. has to be responsible for it and that's what we're going to do", she continued, adding that withdrawing from the Paris agreement will not change the country's commitment to curbing climate change.

Journalists would love to. Given that gasoline accounts for about 40 per cent of overall oil use in the world's largest economy, that's not nothing. The last formal questions the President took were when he met with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on May 18.

English confirmed last week New Zealand had received a request to boost its personnel in Afghanistan. "I think the rest of the world would like to tell us how to manage our own environment and I think that anybody in America can tell you that we're best to decide what America should do". He has also long cast himself as someone who doesn't "believe" in global warming, suggesting that the scientific fact is a belief, not a fact. "I mean, that's what he believes". That is a reason to require the U.S. to make deeper cuts now than other countries must make, especially given that the United States is continuing to emit greenhouse gases at a much higher per capita rate than other large emitters, such as China and India.

After almost four decades of economic reforms and gradual reintegration into the world from self-isolation during the Cultural Revolution, China in recent years has been actively expanding its influence globally and just reaffirmed its commitment to the Paris agreement on climate change. But Trump said Washington will not contribute, pointing to the $20 trillion United States sovereign debt and saying some cities "cannot hire enough police officers or fix vital infrastructure".
