Trump urges Qatar to resolve diplomatic crisis with Saudi Arabia

The Saudis and others have cited an article in which a top Qatari official seemed to pay tribute to Iran as a major regional power; the Qataris say the comments were fabricated as part of the hack.

Qatar confirmed the call, saying Trump "expressed readiness to find a solution to the diplomatic crisis in the Gulf, and stressed his keenness that the Gulf remains stable".

A presidency spokesman said Macron would continue his mediation in coming days. He says the US has no plans to change its military posture in Qatar.

U.S. President Donald Trump took sides in the rift on Tuesday, praising the actions against Qatar, but later spoke by phone with Saudi King Salman and stressed the need for Gulf unity.

There are about 10,000 US forces in Qatar.

"We have great confidence in the president's ability to calm this crisis and to resolve it", Al Thani said in an interview.

On a conference call with reporters Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed as "fake" a CNN report that said U.S. investigators believe Russian hackers contributed to the crisis by planting a fabricated news story with Qatar's state news agency in an effort to divide the USA and its regional allies. "Perhaps this will be the beginning of the end to the horror of terrorism!" "They said they would take a hard line on funding extremism, and all reference was pointing to Qatar".

Qatar's sudden isolation has led to the country holding talks with Turkey, Iran and others to secure food and water supplies, according to a Qatari official.
