US dollar rebounds ahead of Comey testimony

Comey's detailed and vivid recollections of his one-on-one conversations with Trump were revealed in seven pages of prepared testimony released Wednesday, the day before his appearance before the Senate intelligence committee.

During his "Closer Look" segment Wednesday, Seth Meyers delved deep into former FBI Director James Comey's testimony regarding his interactions with Donald Trump, and examined how the president's legislative agenda as essentially stalled thanks to the multiple Russian Federation investigations.

Asked if Trump had reviewed Comey's statement, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said: "I'm not aware if he's had a chance to review any of the specific details of that testimony".

“I had understood the president to be requesting that we drop any investigation of Flynn in connection with false statements about his conversations with the Russain ambassador in December, " Comey said.

Comey said he was taken aback by specific requests, including one during a private Oval Office meeting in February where he said Trump asked him to end a probe into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

In March, after Comey had publicly revealed the existence of a federal counterintelligence investigation into ties between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign, Trump complained that the probe had left a "cloud" that was "impairing his ability to act on behalf of the country".

In parallel, the Senate and House Intelligence Committees are leading their own probes, and a number of key former Trump aides as well as his son-in-law Jared Kushner have been asked for, or subpoenaed to provide, information and testimony. "He brings a lot of credibility", said Benjamin Wittes, a Comey confidant and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. Trump said flatly: "No. No".

The former Federal Bureau of Investigation boss says he suggested the President make the request through official channels at the Department of Justice. Comey is testifying that he gave Trump no such assurance. "He will say he never assured Donald Trump that he was not under investigation, that that would have been improper for him to do so".

Sen. Chris Coons of DE says, "I think we have to be careful about making legal conclusions" and argues that lawmakers should not be "getting in the way" of the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller (MUHL'-ur). "I took the opportunity to implore the Attorney General to prevent any future direct communication between the President and me", Comey said.

"I expect loyalty." Mr Comey said he replied that he could offer his honesty, and that when Mr Trump said he wanted "honest loyalty", Mr Comey paused and said, "You will get that from me".

"No. No. Next question", Trump said.

"At the very least, President Trump's actions should instill a sense of profound worry in the American people about a leader with no sense of propriety or an understanding of the need for independence of law enforcement within the executive branch, an independence that has been respected by Presidents for generations", he said.

Prior to the January 6 meeting, I discussed with the FBI's leadership team whether I should be prepared to assure President-Elect Trump that we were not investigating him personally.

According to The Hill, while the testimony mostly confirms what has been reported since Comey's firing in May, it nonetheless paints an extraordinary picture of the president's interactions with one of the nation's top law enforcement officials.

"I don't think it's wrong to ask for loyalty from anybody in an administration", Burr said.

Another thing senators are expected to ask Comey is whether or not Trump asked the then-FBI director for a pledge of loyalty and, if so, how Comey responded.
