Violence continues in MP, Congress demands CM's resignation; questioned PM's 'silence'

The government today approved higher support price of 14 kharif crops including paddy and pulses in a bid to provide comfort to farmers who begin sowing in full swing from next month.

Mandsaur continues to burn as farmers agitation refuses to die down.

As the farmers' protests rage on in Madhya Pradesh, authorities have issued entirely contradictory statements in the space of 24 hours regarding the violence occurring in the area.

AICC spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said yesterday that it was insulting and unfortunate that the BJP-led NDA government was in denial mode over the firing and accused it of spreading rumours and canards over who fuelled the farmers' protest.

They took a narrow lane through Chinta Khera village to reach Mandsaur to express solidarity with the families of farmers killed when the police opened fire on them on Tuesday. As many as five persons have been killed in firing during protects in Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh. "Madhya Pradesh is not a centre of politics,". Om Prakash Srivastava was appointed the new collector of Mandsaur, ANI reported.

The move comes two weeks after Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim Al Hamad Al Thani made comments that praised Iran as an "Islamic power". The Gulf countries have ordered their citizens out of Qatar and gave Qataris overseas 14 days to return home.

Internet services in Mandsaur, Ratlam and Ujjain were also suspended following the farmers' protests, and a curfew was reportedly imposed.

Farmers in Madhya Pradesh have been protesting for several weeks, demanding better prices for crops and waivers from the state government for repayment of farm loans.

Meanwhile, the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government earlier in the day transferred the collector and superintendent of police of Mandsaur district which witnessed the death of five farmers in police firing. BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao has alleged that Rahul Gandhi is indulging in political tourism, he is playing politics in the name of farmers. The farmers revolt, now more than a week old, doesn't seem to be getting any calmer with incidents of arson, altercation resulting in death and injuries of many.

"Before entering MP, Gandhi rode pillion on a motorcycle in Nimbahed in Chittorgarh district for about five to seven kilometres", IG Udaipur Anand Srivastava told PTI.
