Pakistan joins Shanghai Cooperation Organization as full member


Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday reiterated his stand on "terrorism" at the 17th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit being held in Astana, Kazakhstan.

"Terrorism is violation of human rights and basic human values". The Prime Minister stressed on coordinated efforts to fight the menace of terrorism, including radicalisation, recruitment, training and financing of terrorists.

Issues related to cooperation in fight against worldwide terrorism, security and situation in the Middle East and Afghanistan were on the agenda the SCO summit.

Xi also said that China and India should increase trade and investment cooperation to ensure that the two countries were able to enjoy more "early stage profits" from large scale projects in infrastructure and industry.

"The aim is to combine the potentials of the Eurasian Economic Community, SCO, Association of Southeast Asian Nations [ASEAN] and the Chinese initiative One Belt, One Road", Putin said. "We want to deepen the focus on connectivity", he said.

Asserting that the SCO expansion is taking place at an opportune time, Sharif said that Pakistan is diligently implementing the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) - a flagship of BRI.

Modi said that the SCO will help in bringing peace in war-torn Afghanistan.

"Paving the way for connection of members and observer countries of Shanghai world organization is a vital step that must be taken".

India and Pakistan began accession to a regional security group led by China and Russia on Friday after two days of summits that Russian President Vladimir Putin held up as evidence Moscow is not isolated in the world.

The member states reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the Treaty on Long-Term Good-Neighbourliness, Friendship and Cooperation of the SCO Member States and pledged to resolve border disputes through friendly consultations, it said. He exchanged views with these leaders on matters of mutual interest and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations with these entities and to promote stability and prosperity in the region.
