The stars come out at the Tony Awards

Puzzlingly, he did a Johnny Carson impression, then a Bill Clinton impression (which included a joke about Hillary's emails so bad that Dear Evan Hansen star Ben Platt responded with a rictus of sheer horror) and then finally, just as the best musical award was due to be announced, a Frank Underwood impression.

Kevin Spacey arrives at the 71st annual Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 11, 2017, in NY.

Song writers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul won best original score for their work on the musical.

Gavin Creel accepts Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for Hello, Dolly! "To all young people watching at home, don't waste any time trying to be like anybody else", he said, "because the things that make you unusual are the things that make you powerful".

DON'T MESS WITH BETTE: It takes real bravado to even attempt to shoo off Bette Midler when she's winning her first competitive Tony. "Shut that crap off!" she declared until the crap was, indeed, shut off.

Kevin Spacey opened the show with a rousing musical number proving his stage chops.

Tony host Kevin Spacey, hamming it up as President Frank Underwood from "House of Cards", cracked, "I want to get the hell out of here before Bette Midler thanks anyone else!"

"Oslo", J.T. Rogers' play about the 1993 Oslo Accords, was named Best New Play at the Tony Awards. (In a new touch, all four playwrights personally introduced their work).

Lacamoire wasn't the only Hamilton alum to make a return to the awards podium - after winning best chorography last year for that musical, Andy Blankenbuehler did it again this year with his latest effort, Bandstand.

'Come From Away, ' the Canadian musical won just one: for best direction, by Christopher Ashley.

The leading musical Tony nominees are "Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812", with 12 nominations, "Hello, Dolly!" with 10 and "Dear Evan Hansen", with nine.

Come From Away and The Great Comet put their most intense feet forward, Falsettos was fun and Dear Evan Hansen showcased Platt nicely (and unsurprisingly).

Shows about teen suicide, Middle East peace negotiations, labor strife and the September 11 attacks will square off on Sunday at the annual Tony Awards honoring the best of Broadway theater. That was odd. Most televised award shows make a big deal out of such a presentation and a special part of the program is devoted to the person honored with the award.

The top prizes for leading actor and actress in a play went to Present Laughter actor Kevin Kline and A Doll's House, Part 2's Laurie Metcalf, who beat Cate Blanchett.

Indecent director Rebecca Taichman won for play directing, and veteran actor James Earl Jones was presented with a lifetime achievement award. Like many other winners, he made a pitch for the National Endowment for the Arts, which is facing funding cuts under the Trump administration, saying without it "half the people in this room wouldn't be here".

News Week also reported about other notable jabs at the current USA administration during the 2017 Tony Awards, including one from Cynthia Nixon who accepted her Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play in Little Foxes.

She expressed her appreciation for "all the people who are refusing to just stand and watch them do it".

Still, there were some whoppers, "Oslo's" Michael Aronov, playing an Israeli foreign-ministry official, bested Danny DeVito in featured actor in a play.
