Tony Awards: 'Dear Evan Hansen' wins best musical

On Sunday, "Dear Evan Hansen" won six Tonys, and "Hello Dolly!" starring Bette Midler, took home four awards in a ceremony hosted by Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey.

The star studded ceremony happened at Radio City Music Hall in NY.

The Oscar victor, who scored his first Tony Award back in 1991, kicked off the show with an original number inspired by tracks from the Best Musical nominees Dear Evan Hansen, Groundhog Day, Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, and Come From Away, while he also donned a dress and turban to portray Sunset Boulevard's lead character, Norma Desmond.

In fact, in 1979, Midler lost an Oscar to "Norma Rae" actress Sally Field, who, this year, was also nominated for a Tony for Best Actress in a Play for her role in "The Glass Menagerie".

When the orchestra began to play her off as she spoke on stage she told them: "Shut that crap off".

Kevin Kline, victor for leading actor in a play for Present Laughter, gave a shoutout to the National Endowment for the Arts, which has been threatened with losing its federal funding under the Trump administration.

THE PERIL OF LEADING: After the Tony nominations in May, the smart money must have been on "Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812", which had snapped up a leading 12 nods and looked strong in every category.

The show stars 23-year-old Ben Platt in a breakout performance.

Rebecca Teichman won Best Director for "Indecent, which recounts the bumpy journey to Broadway of Shalom Asch's controversial Yiddish play "God of Vengeance".

Spacey also poked fun at USA presidential candidate Hilary Clinton during the ceremony.

Soon after, cast members from "Come From Away" went onstage linked arm-in-arm with dancers and performed a snippet of "Welcome to the Rock" from the hit musical. Last year, all eyes were on how many statuettes "Hamilton" would capture.

The contemporary staging of Shakespeare's play features an assassinated Caesar who resembles President Trump, a depiction Delta said had "crossed the line on the standards of good taste".
