Senator Paul calls Virginia shooting a 'killing field'

Davis said members left the dugout and went behind cover and eventually moved across the street, behind cover and cars. "We've got to ratchet down the rhetoric that we've seen".

"You've got to be kidding me", Orear said when told by phone about the shooting.

Scalise was among those shot at a baseball practice involving several members of Congress in Alexandria, Va., Wednesday morning.

President Donald Trump said in a statement, "The Vice President and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely".

The motive of Hodgkinson's actions is unknown at this point in the investigation.

"It's the major issues that lead to political discourse that in my opinion, has led to such an uptick of hateful rhetoric of all sides and I stand here today saying, stop".

Davis said he will do whatever he can to work together with all of his colleagues.

Congressman Scalise is in stable condition.

Paul spokeswoman Kelsey Cooper confirmed that neither Paul nor anyone on his staff were injured, although she said everyone is shaken by the event.

The other four people who were shot were lobbyist Matt Mika, director of government relations for Tyson Foods; congressional staffer Zack Barth, an aide to U.S. Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas); and two U.S. Capitol police officers, one of whom shot the gunman.

"50 (shots) would be an understatement, I'm quite sure", Flake said when asked about the total amount of gunfire, including police returning fire. He says you can feel the tension today on Capitol Hill and there is a tremendous amount of security.

"He's loyal to the person he's assigned to protect", Brooks said of the officer. "Fortunately, he's a good guy", Brooks said of a Capitol Police officer.

In a telephone interview with CBS News, Paul said he was taking batting practice in right field when five to 10 gunshots rang out and "everybody hit the dirt".

He added, "This should never happen and we as Republicans and Democrats have to come together and say as a team, and as members of Congress in the greatest country in the history of the world, that this hate and this rhetoric has got to be toned down".
