The main goal of this new program is to really show off what high-quality apps are available on the app store. Google's screening process largely protects Android's 1.4 billion users by keeping the vast majority of malicious apps from entering the marketplace, but there are those that sneak through the cracks.

The collections are kicking off today, and will be broken into two groups - apps and games.

The solutions that make it into Android Excellence will have to display the best user experiences, best Android practices, best design, technical performance, and device optimization. Google said all of the apps that are recognized are highlighting all of the wonderful functions and features available on Android devices.

The revamped curation and Android Excellence collections are already live on mobile, and is in line with what Apple is planning to do with iOS 11 later this year.

You keep track of all your apps through the Dashboard, easily customize your app's looks and functionality, add content with tabs, preview your app in real time and publish it to the markets with a single click.

Flannery's experience includes work at GE Capital, evaluating risks for leveraged buy-outs, and leading restructuring efforts. The new CEO may be more willing to pursue a much-needed breakup of the company, Davis said.

The apps have been removed from the Google Play Store. Some of the information these apps are collecting is necessary for them to work properly: A map app wouldn't be almost as useful if it couldn't use Global Positioning System data to get a location.

The idea with "Android Excellence" is offer Google Play's editors the ability to showcase the highest-quality apps and games on Android on a rotating basis.

Last month, Google spotlighted the winners of its second annual Google Play Awards. Google are very chill about what apps make it on there, so as long as an app isn't offensive or too graphic, it's good to go.

Android Excellence collections will refresh quarterly and can be found within the revamped Editors' Choice section of the Play Store - which includes app and game reviews curated by our editorial team.
