Trump slams reports about obstruction of justice investigation: "Phony story"

Trump slams reports about obstruction of justice investigation:

The move by Special Counsel Robert Mueller to investigate Trump's own conduct marks a major turning point in the almost year-old FBI investigation, which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin.

"You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"

U.S. President Donald Trump commented Thursday on the Washington Post report stating that he is being investigated for possibly obstructing justice in the probe into Russia's alleged involvement in the U.S. election race and the possible ties between members of his election campaign and Moscow.

While none were involved with Trump's campaign, where much of the Russian Federation investigation had appeared to be focused, recent media reports indicated Trump may have requested their help to try to get former FBI Director James Comey to end the probe of Trump's fired national security adviser Michael Flynn, the report noted.

Last week, former FBI Director James Comey told Congress he believes he was sacked by Trump to undermine the agency's Russian Federation probe.

Robert Mueller is seeking interviews with three Trump administration officials who weren't involved in Trump's campaign.

During the hearing, the AG criticized Comey's "usurpation" of authority when the FBI director disclosed the outcome last summer of the bureau's investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private e-mail server.

Former FBI director Robert Mueller, who has been drafted in to head the Bureau's probe into his relationship with Russian Federation, will reportedly also investigate the obstruction claims. Comey stopped short of directly accusing Trump of obstruction, however.

Trump responded to reports he is personally being investigated for obstruction of justice with a characteristic scorched earth defense: claiming mistreatment of historic proportions and calling into question the probity of his accusers. When asked about a letter he wrote recommending firing Comey, Rosenstein said that Mueller could be looking into the decision-making process for the firing - and he was therefore "not at liberty to talk about that now".

Several top intelligence officials have agreed to be interviewed by Mueller's team, according to reports in both The Washington Post and New York Times. Sessions decried the idea he had any role in colluding with Russian officials to influence the outcome of the 2016 election and largely refused to address any conversations he had with or about Trump.

Russian President Vladimir Putin says former FBI Director James Comey's acknowledgement that he had given memos of his conversations with President Donald Trump to a friend who leaked them to the media is "weird".
