Hodgkinson has been identified as the gunman who opened fire at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia Wednesday, injuring House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, and several other people.

According to a Facebook page that appears to belong to Hodgkinson, the man had worked as a home inspector with JTH Inspections.

He attended Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, and through the end of a year ago worked for JTH Inspections, the Facebook page indicates. He had been a vocal opponent of the Republican Party. Hodgkinson died after being shot in a gun battle at an Alexandria, Va., baseball field where Republican lawmakers were practicing for a charity baseball game. He said he was part of a "99%" team drawing attention to the amount of money and political power the top 1 percent of Americans acquired. The newspaper photographed him at the event.

In the past year, many of his posts consisted of signed petitions with titles such as: "Bernie - please run no matter what" and "Hillary Rodham Clinton should concede the nomination to Bernie Sanders;" CNN reported. Bernie Sanders' left-wing populist movement, The New York Times is reporting.

"We have to answer motive and why he was here and why he did what he did", Slater said. "He was more on the really progressive side of things".

Sanders issued a two-paragraph statement on Wednesday's shooting at a baseball practice for Republican lawmakers, and read it almost verbatim on the Senate floor.

The alleged shooter, identified by police as James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois, was killed in a shootout with police Wednesday morning after shooting Rep. Steve Scalise and three others at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia. "Let me be as clear as I can be: Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society, and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms".

He adds in his statement that "real change" can only come through nonviolent action.

Former Davenport alderman Wayne Hean told Local 4 News that he remembers Hodgkinson because of his "extreme views" and a common connection to Belleville.

Head said Hodgkinson came off as extreme.

Also, courts records in the 1990's show arrests for resisting police and drunken driving.
