Pakistan successfully fought twin evils of terrorism, extremism: PM tells SCO summit

India has been an observer of the SCO meeting since 2005.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif says all countries associated with the SCO should leave behind a legacy of peace instead of harvesting conflict in the world.

The Business Council is an important part of the SCO and will play an even more significant role with growing focus of the grouping on economic aspects.

Yesterday, India and Pakistan formally joined the SCO, a security bloc spearheaded by China and Russian Federation.

Leaders of the largely symbolic body - including Russia's Vladimir Putin and China's Xi Jinping - formally signed off on the sub-continent duo's accession at the annual SCO summit in Kazakhstan's capital Astana.

The two leaders reportedly discussed the current situation in the war-torn country. Both leaders also discussed the importance of enhancing connectivity. India has also alleged that China embarked on the initiative without consulting it.

The CPEC is part of China's ambitious multi-billion Belt and Road intuitive (BRI).

"The SCO has successfully stood the test of time, while millions of people all over the world have come to understand and appreciate its principles", he said.

The two leaders discussed bilateral relations, including trade and economic cooperation, and also current worldwide issues during the meeting.

Faced with profound and complex changes of the worldwide situation, China and India, as the world's two largest developing countries, should pay more attention to cooperation and go ahead with each other as partners, so as to instill more momentum into each other's development and contribute to world peace, stability and common development, said the Chinese president.

"We have full faith that SCO would give a new push to fight terrorism", he said. After membership of Pakistan and India, the SCO has become a forum having four nuclear powers - Russia, China, India and Pakistan.

He also called to convene a summit on defense and security issues.

Issues related to cooperation in fight against global terrorism, security and situation in the Middle East and Afghanistan were on the agenda the SCO summit.
