After Scalise was shot in the hip, the bullet traveled through his pelvis, fractured bones and injured internal organs.

Doctors said it was bad at first, an "imminent risk of death", but the news was better Friday night.

"He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding", the statement said. It appears that Scalise, his Republican colleagues and others, who were practicing for a charity baseball game, were targeted by a man - who died from his own wounds - who disagreed with Republicans' positions.

According to Sava, the bullet fractured upon entering Scalise's hip.

Doctors expect Mr Scalise will eventually be able to walk and return to work at "full capacity". Further surgery to "manage abdominal injuries and bone injuries" will be required, Sava said, and Scalise remains in critical condition, Politico reported.

"His risk of death is substantially lower than when he came in", he added.

"Rep. Scalise is a proud LSU alumnus and great supporter of the university, and we are proud to help out even in this small way", said LSU President F. King Alexander.

Scalise's next operation will likely take place in 48 hours, Sava said.

Sixty members of Congress from both parties knelt at second base in prayer for the four people wounded during a shooting that took place during the Republicans' final tune-up for the 57th Congressional #Baseball Game.

"While the president would like to attend the game and show his support for all of these courageous public servants, he has been advised that there is not enough time to follow Secret Service protocols", Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said Wednesday night.

The commander-in-chief said, "By playing tonight we are showing the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence or assaults on our democracy".

Hodgkinson, a Belleville, Illinois, home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park, had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.

CT representatives Jim Himes, Joe Courtney, Elizabeth Esty and Rosa DeLauro all say they will be at the game.

Hodgkinson contacted both of his state's Democratic senators frequently, always through email links on their websites, spokesmen said Friday.

Hodgkinson also contacted the office of Rep. Mike Bost, R-Ill., at least 10 times over the past year, a Bost spokesman has said, characterizing the emails and phone calls as negative but not threatening.
