New iPad Pro inches toward replacing PC, but falls short

Bare Feats, a benchmarking blog, posted some CPU and GPU test results that pitted the 2017 MacBook Pro models against the new iPad Pro 12.9 inch and 10.5-inch models. The 10.5-inch iPad Pro starts out at $649, and that's before you toss in the $99 Apple Pencil and the $159 Smart Keyboard-both of which I think are must-have accessories to take full-advantage of the tablet's capabilities.

Overall, if you have a first-generation iPad Pro and are happy with it, you may not find a compelling reason to upgrade to a new one. This detachable keyboard does not have a trackpad, but you can use the peripheral's unique technology that allows the user to move the cursor around just by placing two fingers anywhere on the add-on device. So, it is perhaps better to invest in a cover for the iPad Pro to ensure that it stays protected against external damage. That's wonderful for all of us consumers, but it is not great for Apple or any other company building a tablet device. This is not a cheap iPad Pro case, clocking in at $129 and it will not protect your iPad Pro while you are using it. The professional tablet, which comes in two screen sizes - 10.5 or 12.9 diagonal inches - is incrementally improved from previous models. I saw this in a demo with Apple, where an employee showed me just how quickly the iPad can change apps and support multiple windows on the screen at once. That's slightly higher than the 10.5-inch iPad Pro's, but the difference should be invisible to the naked eye.

I don't know about you, but I wish Apple really would follow the Surface Pro. The company has chose to follow in Apple's footsteps and is now selling the stylus for $99. The new operating system will make multitasking more powerful.

Apple has added, for the first time, a 10.5-inch size to the iPad lineup. On the contrary, the Surface Pro 2017's pricing starts at $799. It's also brighter than last year's model, which means it's easier to read outdoors. The only downside here is the fact that the tablet-laptop hybrid's kickstand isn't built to be used on the lap.

It's pretty obvious by now that the Microsoft Surface Pro 5 is the better option if you are looking for a laptop replacement. This is why the folks at iFixit performed a teardown of the 10.5-inch iPad Pro to reveal what lies inside the device, and to also determine the device's repairability. But with the new tablet that Apple announced earlier this month at the Worldwide Developers Conference, a laptop-beating tablet seems closer than ever, especially once iOS 11 is made available in the autumn.
