USA soldiers wounded in insider attack in Afghanistan

Seven US troops were shot and wounded in an insider attack at a base in northern Afghanistan on Saturday, officials said.

The shootout at Camp Shaheen near northern Mazar-i-Sharif city is the second "green-on-blue" attack - where Afghan soldiers turn their weapons on worldwide forces assisting them - reported this week.

It comes exactly one week after three U.S. soldiers were killed in the country's eastern Nangarhar province by an Afghan soldier in an attack that was claimed by the Taliban.

A statement on the Resolute Support Twitter feed Saturday says the seven were wounded when an Afghan army soldier opened fire.

A spokesperson for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation defense mission in Afghanistan confirmed that the incident took place at Camp Shaheen in the capital of Balkh province Mazar-e-Sharif, Efe news reported.

Two police officers were killed and five wounded during the attack, Reuters reports, citing Danish.

Camp Shaheen was the site of a major attack by Taliban militants in April, killing more than 130 Afghan Army personnel.

Afghan government forces are also affected by such attacks within their own ranks.

The incident occurred at Camp Shaheen and wounded soldiers have been medevaced to nearby hospitals, officials said.
