Amit Shah declines to comment on Presidential candidates

Amit Shah is expected to mollify Thackeray and ensure his support for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate in the upcoming presidential election.

While a host of BJP and Sena leaders were present at the Thackeray home, none of them were part of the meeting. "Uddhav Thackeray ji has said that for Shiv Sena Mohan Bhagwat ji is the deserving candidate for the post of President of the nation and the party collectively bats for him", he added. Shah and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had a closed door meeting with Uddhav and his son Aaditya for close to an hour.

Thackeray told Shah on Sunday that the Sena would take a decision only after the BJP's nominee for the Presidential election was named.

Naidu, after the meeting, told the media that the name of the Presidential candidate would be announced before June 23.

Springing a surprise, the BJP on Monday named Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind, a Dalit and a BJP leader, as the ruling NDA's candidate for the July 17 Presidential election.

The meet comes after a three-member party committee, comprising of Rajnath Singh, M Venkaiah Naidu and Arun Jaitley last week met with allies and opposition parties.

On the other hand, Amit Shah said that BJP is ready for mid-term polls and urged activists to strengthen the party base in Maharashtra.

Shah said the Modi government brought an end to politics of appeasement and dynastic rule.

With the Sena realising how much the BJP needs it for July's presidential polls, the saffron party is pushing for a hard bargain.
