Champions Trophy: Difficult to counter Fakhar Zaman's batting style, admits Virat Kohli

After leaving India reeling on six for two following the dismissals of Sharma and Kohli, Amir's figures read 1.4 overs, four runs, two wickets.

Amir, whose career was almost ended on the other side of London's River Thames by a ban and jail sentence for his involvement in a spot-fixing scan during a 2010 Test at Lord's, made a brilliant comeback after a back spasm forced him out of the semi-final victory over England.

India captain Virat Kohli, who was one of three batsmen dismissed in a devastating opening spell from Mohammad Amir, accepted his side had been a distant second best.

Pandya, however, briefly raised their spirits with a quickfire 76, reaching his fifty with three successive sixes off Shadab and hitting six maximums in all before he was run out. It read, "We are the champions". Fakhar scored 114 off 106 balls.

"After the India (group) match I said to my boys, the tournament is not finished yet".

"Players like Fakhar Zaman, Shadab [Khan], Hasan Ali, all these players deserve to be recognised for their performances; that they were playing their first ICC tournament and nobody expected us to perform the way we did with a young team".

With its win, Pakistan, which came into the tournament ranked No. 8 in the world, has clinched its first Champions Trophy victory. Azhar Ali (59), Mohammed Hafeez (57) and Babar Azam (46) also played solid to prop up the Pakistan innings as they put on board 338 for four.

"You can't take anyone lightly, we never take anyone lightly, we gave it our best shot but they were just more intense and more passionate on the day".

Soon after they emerged winners, Pakistani fans gathered outside the Oval ground started celebrating by dancing and chanting "Pakistan Zindabad".

India should have had a wicket when Fakhar was caught behind off Jasprit Bumrah on three.

Ashwin, who has played more than 100 ODIs since 2010, conceded 45 runs off 33 balls to Fakhar, the most one man has taken off him in ODIs. Claiming Dhawan and Sharma's wicket early will go a long way to giving Pakistan a sniff at the title.

That was until Azhar was run out after a awful mix up but Fakhar put that behind him kicking on to score his maiden ODI hundred.

India will feel aggrieved as Fakhar, on three, was caught by wicketkeeper Mahehdra Singh Dhoni off a Jasprit Bumrah no-ball and the 27-year-old left-hander took full advantage to reach his first global century.

Any thought of the unlikeliest of victories was snuffed out when Pandya was run out by the length of the pitch after a mix-up with Jadeja.
