Cloudy - and potentially rainy - conditions forecast for the Charleston area this week

A flash flood watch - meaning very unsafe flood conditions could develop - is in effect for the entire Capital Region from noon until late tonight, forecasters report.

The NWS says "the main severe threat is strong damaging wind gusts, there isalso a low threat for damaging hail and a few weak tornadoes". The one safe bet with this system is that wherever it goes, it will bring heavy rain and flooding with it along the Gulf Coast. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 79. South wind around 5 miles per hour. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tonight: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 7 p.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 7 p.m. South southwest wind 6 to 11 miles per hour.

Saturday Night. A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. We will have partly cloudy skies with highs in the lower 90s. Southwest wind 6 to 15 miles per hour. Chance of rain is 30 percent. Saturday night, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a low around 62. Wind: SE 10-15 miles per hour.

Wednesday: Mostly cloudy with a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms, some storm will contain heavy rain and gusty winds. Partly sunny, with a high near 78. Northwest wind 5 to 13 miles per hour.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 53. Thursday could be the exception as the high that day could reach the upper 80s.
