Congressional baseball game goes on in wake of shooting

The annual charity game brings Republicans and Democrats to the field in a friendly rivalry.

The senior Republican is at the Medstar Washington Hospital Centre with a rifle wound in his left hip that shattered bones, tore organs and caused severe bleeding.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center Director of Trauma Dr. Jack Sava speaks during a news conference in Washington, Friday, June 16, 2017, about the condition of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of La. who was shot in Alexa. Reporters in Washington tracked Scalise's every hospital update and shared it on social media. The congressman underwent another surgery Saturday, and the hospital said he was more responsive and speaking with family.

Trump, after visiting the Louisiana Republican at the hospital, on Wednesday said Scalise was "in very tough shape - but he is a real fighter".

Scalise is well known for his love of the game. While he is conscious and able to communicate through notes, the family says Mika requires medical equipment to breathe and will need additional surgeries.

Scalise is a member of the team and had been fielding balls at second base in preparation for the game when he was shot.

He raised a stunning $24 million by the end of May, five times the amount raised by Handel, a former Georgia secretary of state. The race is expected to be decided by a razor-thin margin as Handel works against Democratic challenger Jon Ossoff .

The baseball tradition is said to have forged a friendship between Richmond and his fellow Louisiana representative Steve Scalise.

The event held this year at Nationals Park, home of the major league Washington Nationals, was an emotional affair, coming a day after a gunman opened fire at the Republican team practice, wounding four.

"By playing tonight, you are showing the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence, or assaults on our democracy", Trump said.

"It's been much more hard than people even thought at the time", Trump said before an event on apprenticeships at the White House. What's more, Special Agent David Bailey, who was injured in the attack during the Republicans' practice in Virginia on Wednesday, threw out the first pitch to a warm welcome.

House Speaker Paul Ryan was met with a bipartisan standing ovation when he announced that the game was still on during a meeting on Wednesday. Many are tributes and prayers for Congressman Steve Scalise.

The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP.
