Congressman Scalise's condition improves after another surgery

Scalise's condition was upgraded to "serious", from "critical" after undergoing another surgery on Saturday, according to a statement from Dr. Jack Sava, the director of trauma at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Mr Scalise was shot as he fielded at second base during practice for an annual Republicans-Democrats baseball game.

That was not the case last week but only because Majority Whip Steve Scalise's Capitol Police detail was on hand and courageously engaged the shooter.

Sava said he told Scalise's family: "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his backyard with his family".

The congressman, who had been critical, was now in a serious condition, the hospital said.

Two Capitol police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, as well as House Republican aide Zack Barth were injured, but have been released from hospital.

Caitlyn Jenner on GOP baseball shooting: 'liberals can't shoot straight'
Caitlyn Jenner has come under fire, after cracking a joke about a shooting that took place at a baseball game last week. This week, Jenner attended the College Republicans' National Convention Gala. "We have to minimize that type of stuff".

MedStar Washington Hospital, where Scalise is being treated after being shot, updated his condition on Saturday.

Since then, the lawmaker has undergone multiple surgeries and procedures to stop the bleeding and fix bone. Scalise is recovering from "substantial damage" he sustained when a bullet pierced his left hip and traveled directly across to the other hip. "Never heard his name, " said Patty A. Sprague, the St. Clair County auditor, who has been in elective office for more than a decade. "The doctor added, however, that Scalise will certainly be in the hospital for a considerable period of time, presumably weeks".

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise listens during an interview in NY on October 8, 2014. Flake was at Wednesday's Republican practice in Alexandria, VA, where James T. Hodgkinson opened fire on the players with a rifle.

His social media profile indicated Hodgkinson was a dedicated Bernie Sanders supporter who despised the Republican party and former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. He has been sedated, but has been brought out of sedation periodically and been able to recognize and communicate with his family, Sava said.

The family of Matt Mika, 38, issued a statement Saturday saying they expected him to remain in the ICU through at least this weekend.
