Scotland prop Allan Dell and fly-half Finn Russell were then called up following Scotland's 24-19 defeat of Australia in Sydney on Saturday.

While Tuesday's team contains few, if any, of the players who will face the All Blacks at Eden Park, Gatland says the midweekers will play a role in keeping the Lions' confidence high approaching the three-test series.

Despite the win, it was another unimposing performance from the Test selection, who are running out of time before next week's first Test against the All Blacks.

The Lions ran out comfortable and worthy winners, 32-10, over Maori All Blacks with Wales full back Leigh Halfpenny contributing 20 points to the victory in Rotorua.

Moriarty, who played in the tour opener against the New Zealand Provincial Barbarians, becomes the Lions' second loss to injury after fullback Stuart Hogg departed with a facial fracture.

Head coach Gatland has been accused of devaluing the Lions shirt in deeming England's tourists in Argentina and Ireland's in Japan to require too much travel time to join his squad - but Laidlaw moved to downplay those frustrations.

For most of the Lions players, staying out of the 23 for Tuesday's clash with the Chiefs was a goal, given that it would vastly reduce their prospects of featuring in the first Test.

FORMER Gloucester captain Greig Laidlaw has defended Warren Gatland's decision to draft in six new players to the British and Irish Lions squad.

"It makes it hard to complete attacking opportunities and situations because there is so much happening off the ball in terms of holding players".

"You look at that 2013 tour, we made nine changes between the three Tests", Gatland said.

"(England coach) Eddie Jones said he would not stand in the way of any of his England players being called up.

A penalty try and another score from Maro Itoje crushed the Maori spirit, with the home side given precious little sniff of stealing a victory to emulate their predecessors of 2005.

Gatland was expected to play as close to his Test side as possible against the Maoris, but his plans were affected by Owen Farrell's withdrawal due to a thigh injury.

The arm-wrestle approach, however, suited Gatland who was not concerned about losing two midweek games so far, as long as his side were improving towards the Tests.

"Given an opportunity, he'll come in, but there's quality players within the squad already".

The Lions held a 12-10 lead at the break courtesy of four Halfpenny penalties as they deprived the Maori of fast ball.

While the Lions had 75 percent of possession in the Maori match, including 90 percent in the second half, they scored only one try from general play.

"We're really grateful for their assistance and for the work they do, and they've played a big part in the success of this event".

Robbie Henshaw and Jared Payne slot into the midfield, suggesting two of Ben Te'o, Jonathan Joseph and Jonathan Davies will start on Saturday.
