German minister sees hope of 'soft' Brexit, with conditions

The UK wants to begin working out the details of a trade agreement alongside the terms of the withdrawal process.

Having lost a majority in parliament, May needs the DUP's 10 lawmakers to win any kind of vote, including on the pieces of legislation needed to enact Britain's divorce from the EU.

Mr Davis warned: "These talks will be hard at points but we will be approaching them in a constructive way".

It is the beginning of a long slog for both Theresa May's Government and the European Union, with the talks expected to last until October 2018 before a deal can be agreed.

Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker was said to have reacted with incredulity at a suggestion by Theresa May when they met for dinner in Downing Street in April that an agreement could be wrapped up at the next European Union summit in Brussels at the end of June.

The issue most likely to torpedo negotiations is Britain's bill for leaving the bloc.

The first day of formal Brexit negotiations follows "talks about talks" between Commission officials and British civil servants last week.

But the true figure could be far lower, as the 100 billion does not account for tens of billions that Britain is set to get back in shared assets and rebates.

But as the first senior royal to discuss Brexit, he claimed companies were eyeing fresh opportunities in non-EU markets once Britain leaves the bloc.

Brussels insists that those living in Britain now should be able to keep those rights after Brexit.

Benchmark U.S. crude fell another 22 cents to $44.51 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan dropped 0.7 percent, led by resource shares.

Additionally, the first phase should include discussion of the possible common approach toward third country partners and global organizations.

But EU officials have warned her off trying to do this at an EU summit this Thursday, saying it is too soon.

Jean-Claude Juncker: The European Commission president will not be directly involved in talks and his spokesman has said he is unlikely to spend more than half an hour a week on Brexit.

Mr Hammond said Brexit meant the United Kingdom would definitely be leaving the single market, but must avoid "cliff edges".

The Queen's Speech traditionally takes place during the ceremonial State Opening of Parliament, which this year was planned for Monday and has since been postponed to Wednesday as the Conservative party stitched up its deal with the Democratic Unionist Party for support of its minority government.

"What we put in place may not be a single arrangement that endures forever, it may be an arrangement which lasts for a couple of years as a temporary measure before we get to the long-term agreed status quo", he told BBC One's Andrew Marr Show.

It will test the ingenuity of thousands of public servants racing against the clock to untangle 44 years of European Union membership before Britain is out, 649 days from now, on March 30, 2019.

What that future relationship will look like remains anyone's guess.

Threats by Britain to walk away without a deal have also anxious European capitals.

The British team includes the Permanent Secretary at the Department for Exiting the European Union (DExEU) Olly Robbins, Phillip Rycroft, the department's Second Permanent Secretary and Simon Case, the newly appointed Director-General of the UK-EU Partnership.
