Manchester United given hope of signing Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier

Tottenham Hotspur have told Manchester United that they will need to table an offer worth £50m for midfielder Eric Dier, according to reports.

The defender left for Leicester City, leaving a spot in the squad, and with the sheer amount of games Spurs expect to be playing next season, they want a top class replacement coming in.

England worldwide centre back Chris Smalling is being "hawked around Premier League clubs" and seems to be the choice of manager Jose Mourinho to leave Old Trafford, following the arrival of Victor Lindelof from Benfica.

According to The Telegraph though, he may have trouble convincing the United hierarchy to splash out a whopping £50m on the England global, even though he's seen as the long-term replacement for Michael Carrick.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy's £50 million valuation of Dier is more than United expected to pay for the 23-year-old who has developed considerably under Mauricio Pochettino.

Dier was reminded by Pochettino in March that it was Spurs who "provided all the tools" for him "to be a Premier League player". He can additionally play at centre-back but it remains in midfield that Mourinho sees him in the long-term.

Baggies boss Tony Pulis has a put a new central defender high on his wanted list and has already targeted a move for John Terry following his release from Chelsea, however Smalling is also said to be on his wanted list.
