Police illegally entering house, torturing supporters, claims GJM chief

GJM chief Bimal Gurung claimed that people of the hills are being tortured by the Bengal government.

The popular hill-town witnessed widespread clashes between the protesters and the police on Saturday in which one person was killed and 35 security personnel were injured.

As violence continued unabated in Darjeeling and Kashmir, Home Minister Rajnath Singh Friday night reviewed the security situation in the hill district of West Bengal. "Mamata Banerjee has insulted us, she has called us terrorists", GJM leader Binay Tamang said.

The GJM, which is agitating for Gorkhaland, scaled up its protests following the arrest of the son of Morcha leader Amar Rai and raids in the houses of party leaders.

"All of us want to assert our own independent identity which is a good thing because we have been united despite being so diverse in our cultural backdrop".

Besides, many people, including 19 policemen, were admitted to various hospitals in Darjeeling and Siliguri after they sustained injuries during the skirmish that started after the police tried to stop two huge rallies emerging from Patleniwas, sources said. "The struggle will intensify in the hills".

The 10th day of the Darjeeling stand-off saw blood being spilled on the streets, with the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha claiming death of three supporters in police firing and a central paramilitary force assistant commandant battling for life after agitators slashed his throat.

The GJM on Saturday claimed three of its activists were killed in police firing, but Banerjee has rejected this allegation. Some police personnel and GJM activists were injured in the clash. "She (Banerjee) has apprised me of the situation prevailing in Darjeeling", he said.

Reacting to today's violence, Tourism Minister Gautam Deb said, "The government will not accept the GJM's hooliganism".

President Trump Reveals He Is Being Investigated
Last week, Comey testified in a Senate hearing that he believed he was sacked "because of the Russian Federation investigation". Mueller has the authority to investigate whether Trump tried to obstruct justice which is a potentially impeachable offense.

The GJM which is in power in the semi-autonomous Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, is spearheading the agitation there demanding a separate state - Gorkhaland.

He also said two GJM supporters were hit by bullets in Ghoom Bhanjyang where GJM had broken through police barricades.

Meanwhile, the Union Home Ministry on Tuesday sought a report from the state government about the Darjeeling political turmoil.

"The Centre must extend its full cooperation to us".

Singh asked the CM to take all possible steps to restore peace in the hill station.

Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) workers hurled petrol bombs, stones and bottles at the police at several places which led the security forces to lob teargas shells and resort to baton-charge to disperse the mobs, a police official said.

"All concerned parties and stakeholders should resolve their differences and misunderstandings through dialogue in amicable environment", Rajnath said.

Kolkata: Darjeeling MP and Minister of State SS Ahluwalia on Thursday demanded that the West Bengal government should immediately issue a notification mentioning that Bangla is not compulsory in schools across the hill districts.
