US Special Counsel in Russia Probe Examining Kushner's Finances

But Senate investigators continue to press other top officials of the U.S. Intelligence Community for details about their own recent contacts with President Trump, which have been reported to include appeals to help end the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe of Russian election meddling.

FBI detectives want to interview intelligence sources over allegations Trump attempted to halt an investigation into his sacked national security adviser Michael Flynn, according to CNN.

"I'm being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!" said Trump, lamenting what he called a "witch hunt". "Witch Hunt", the president wrote in a Friday tweet.

And it was Rosenstein who appointed Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

Trump earlier derided claims of collusion between Moscow and his associates as "phony" Thursday after reports the head of a probe into Russia's alleged election meddling is investigating him for obstructing justice.

It's "only a matter of time before Rachel Brand is the acting attorney general for purposes of this investigation", tweeted Matt Miller, MSNBC justice and security analyst and former Justice Department spokesman.

The investigation into ties between President Trump's campaign and the Russian government has now turned to investigating Trump himself for obstruction of justice, the Washington Post reported Wednesday.

Amid stirrings earlier this week that Trump was possibly considering the idea of firing Mueller, it was Rosenstein who testified before a congressional hearing that such an act could not be taken without specific cause. The report came quietly but abruptly from Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who was brought to Capitol Hill shortly after Comey was sacked in order to fill in for Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

"While he has left open the possibility of dismissing Mr. Mueller and began considering it shortly after the special counsel was appointed last month, the president's anger has been largely trained on Mr. Sessions and Mr. Rosenstein, whom he views less as executors of law than as salaried staff", the Times reads.

"Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?" he said. And there are Republicans on Capitol Hill, especially on the intelligence committees, who believe - who are anxious that the big question of Russian Federation interference will get lost in this new focus on whether the president obstructed or not.

The Twitter storm comes as it emerged Vice President Mike Pence had also hired a personal lawyer to represent him in the intensifying investigation.

Now they go for obstruction of justice - phony story. Still, the snowballing investigation has deeply angered Trump, who denies he has any nefarious ties to Russian Federation. "Witch hunt", Trump added.
