White House Official Confirms Discussions on S. Korean Missile Defense

The North said its test was a success.

South Korea will hold off on installing remaining components of a USA anti-missile defence system until it completes an assessment of the system's impact on the environment, the country's presidential office said on Wednesday.

The new tests come a day after South Korea suspended deployment of a controversial U.S. missile shield - an apparent concession to China, which is strongly opposed to the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system.

In the three earlier launches, North Korea tested different kinds of ballistic missiles, two medium-to-long range missiles as well as a short-range Scud class weapon.

KCNA said the weapon that was tested on Thursday featured in a military parade in Pyongyang on April 15, which marked the birthday of the North's founding father Kim Il-Sung.

It tested a new type of land-to-sea missile off its east coast yesterday.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - North Korea tested a new type of cruise missile that could strike US and South Korean warships "at will" if the country was attacked, its state media said Friday, a day after Seoul detected four missiles being launched from a eastern coastal town.

"The U.S. trusts the (South Korean government's) official stance that the THAAD deployment was an alliance decision and it will not be reversed", a Pentagon spokesman said.

THE Philippines on Thursday expressed "grave concern" following North Korea's missile launches near the eastern port city of Wonsan on May 21 and May 29.

But Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez equalised just eight minutes later with a header from the edge of the six-yard box. The result left European champion Portugal and Gold Cup victor Mexico trailing host Russian Federation in Group A.

Last month, North Korea premiered a powerful new midrange missile that outside experts said flew higher than any other missile previously tested by North Korea.

During his campaign, Moon, who won the presidency last month, complained that the United States and the previous South Korean administration rushed to deploy the missile-defense system before the election to present him with a fait accompli.

The launches come less than a week after the United Nations expanded sanctions against Kim Jong-Un's regime in response to recent ballistic missile tests.

The launch is the latest in a fast-paced series of missile tests defying world pressure and threats of more sanctions.

MAY 21: North Korea tests a solid-fuel Pukguksong-2 missile that is harder for outsiders to detect before launch.

In early June, the US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) imposed new sanctions on North Korea and entities trading with it over its ongoing development of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and continued violations of UN Security Council resolutions. The North's claims could not be independently confirmed.

Moon, who has said he wants to try to resolve the North's nuclear crisis through dialogue, also has suggested that South Korea must "learn to say no" to Washington.

Pyongyang's ultimate goals are to develop the ability to put a nuclear warhead on a missile, while also building an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of hitting the U.S.
