Deal Talk: Amazon Stays Mum, While Whole Foods Goes Off Script

In fact, the footprints of Amazon and Whole Foods are strikingly similar in many respects. The deal is subject to approval from both the regulators and shareholders and the company expects the deal to close in 2H17.

The smitten CEO called it a "whirlwind courtship", though he also admitted he had a dream 18 months ago that Amazon and Whole Foods would one day get together.

TheStreet visited three grocery locations in New York's financial district, and of those three, Whole Foods noticeably thrived.

He also reported that Whole Foods Market stores and brands will maintain the quality standards that the brand has built its reputation on.

As if (AMZN) hasn't rattled retailers enough in recent years, the e-commerce giant announced it was buying Whole Foods Market (WFM) last week, and that sparked speculation that food-delivery service Grubhub (GRUB) might be Amazon's next takeover target. "And she said, 'That's insane.'" Mackey said, drawing guffaws from employees at a town hall meeting on Friday.

"We will be joining a company that's visionary", Mackey said.

Amazon may also put some of its own private-label products into Whole Foods stores, replacing some of Whole Foods' pricier products, according to Bloomberg.

Spicer expected to take less public role
Daily Mail U.S. political editor David Martosko has been in talks to take over the role of communications director. On Monday, Spicer told reporters that audio recordings would also not be allowed.

What this deal means for food manufacturing is unclear yet. "We talked for 2 1/2 hours". We- we just hit the lottery, gang.

"There's boundless ideas and synergies, and I think it will inspire some other interesting combinations between online and brick-and-mortar going forward", said Ripco Real Estate's Peter Ripka.

Online grocery sales are expected to increase from $71 billion this year to $177 billion in 2022, according to John Blackledge, an analyst at Cowen & Co.

Mr. Mackey likened Friday's deal announcement to an engagement, and "like an old traditional marriage, where there are all kinds of rules and chaperones, we can't consummate the marriage, until we're actually officially hooked up". "This is not a Tinder relationship". "That's going to make us a lot better company, a more competitive company", he said. Mackey had slammed the hedge-fund investors in an interview with Texas Monthly, calling them "greedy bastards" who were only interested in making a quick buck on the sale of the company.

Amazon hopes that the move will help differentiate Whole Foods from other grocers.

Adrienne Anderson, at a Whole Foods in Savannah, Georgia, says she shops at Whole Foods nearly exclusively for meat and fresh produce "because of the quality and selection" and because fruits and vegetables are locally sourced.
