India still had three wickets in hand but the deafening cheers from the Pakistan fans made clear that the end was nigh.

Pakistan's win in the final was all the more satisfying for the 1992 World Cup winners because their only defeat this edition came against the men in blue in the opener. The team was ranked at a lowly No 8 in One Day Internationals and had already been defeated by India in an earlier game in the tournament.

Imran, who is now a seasoned politician, felt that the captain and the management should now build on the Champions Trophy win and start preparing for the 2019 World Cup.

Registering their largest margin of victory in the 129 one-day matches Pakistan has played against India, the victory had fans in Pakistan dancing in the streets, waving Pakistani flags and setting off fireworks.

In the ODI bowlers rankings, Pakistan's Hasan Ali, who took 13 wickets in five games to be named Player of the Champions Trophy, broke into the top 10, leapfrogging 12 of his peers to claim the seventh spot.

Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed said: "After the India match in the group stage, I told the players the tournament hadn't finished yet".

Having lost its first match against long-standing rival India by 124 runs, Pakistan completed an extraordinary turnaround to reach the final, where they beat the same opponents by 180 runs.

It's a tee ball, sitting there, metaphorically anyway, on its little rubber tube, waiting for James to put the sweet spot on it. Gilbert thought his appraisal of where the team stood and what moves needed to be made was more accurate than Griffin's .

This is not the first time Indian Muslims have gotten in trouble for celebrating Pakistan's win. "Even after Pakistan ended their batting and put up a huge score before India, the odds were in favour of Virat's team due to the strong batting line-up and ability to chase down big totals", said another bookie from Mumbai.

"It was a great achievement by the boys and full credit to them".

Fakhar continued to a 92-ball century, finally falling to Indian bowler Hardik Pandya in the 33rd over.

If that is the case, Pakistan will never be able to defend their crown, and the epic India vs Pakistan final will prove to be the last match of this particular ICC event.

"This is your trophy and we won it just because of you", Ahmed said.

Kohli accepted his side had been second best as he acknowledged Pakistan's "amazing tournament".

Pakistan was cruising at 0-128 in the 23 over with Azhar on 59, when he was involved in a farcical mix-up with opening partner Fakhar Zaman.
