Pennsylvania issues permits to 12 medical marijuana growers

Pennsylvania issues permits to 12 medical marijuana growers

The department divided Pennsylvania into six permitting regions as part of its implementation of the state's Medical Marijuana Act, signed by Gov. Tom Wolf in April 2016, but there is no requirement that the companies be based in the regions they apply to serve.

Prime Wellness of Pennsylvania, LLC, and Franklin Labs, LLC were both named winners in the state's southeastern region, which includes Berks, Montgomery, and Chester counties.

Collins said the redacted applications of the 177 companies seeking grower-processor permits will be made available on the department's website sometime in July.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has awarded a Carmichaels area facility one of 12 receiving permits to be grower/processors of medical marijuana.

The deadline to submit applications for medical marijuana growers/processors and dispensaries was in March. The department received 280 applications for dispensaries, which are the storefronts where medical marijuana will be sold.

But it did have an extensive scoring process and, in the interests of transparency, the "scorecards" for each application are to be posted on the department web site shortly, Collins said.

This won't be the last time we hear about medical marijuana this month.

The new growers have six months to get their locations operational, Collins said. That will likely mean that more people in Pennsylvania will be eligible to use the drug, he said.

"Out of all the Pennsylvania cities that I've ever been to, heard about or had friends in, I definitely would not have expected Scranton to be one of the ones that was on the map for that!"

A timeline released by the Department of Health shows that patients should be able to start registering with the Department of Health in September and that medical marijuana cards for patients will be issued, beginning in November.

Among other provisions, the bill grandfathers in seven existing providers, renames them "medical marijuana treatment centers" (MMTCs) and requires the Department to license 10 new providers by October.

"This was a huge day for patients and for the people of Pennsylvania", said state Sen. In other states, including NY, medical marijuana programs have been slowed by legal disputes brought by businesses that failed to get permits to grow or sell the drug, Salemme said.
