Georgia Dems search for upsides in House loss

WASHINGTON (AP) - A dozen or so House Democrats want Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to go after a dispiriting loss in a House election in Georgia.

Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, had challenged Pelosi for her leadership position earlier this year, and agreed, during an interview on CNN Wednesday night, that Republicans' ads using her as a Democratic boogey-woman have been effective.

After briefly addressing the health-care bill unveiled Tuesday by Senate Republicans, Pelosi spent the bulk of her weekly news conference playing down the special-election losses, defending her leadership and lashing out at a cadre of "blatantly self-serving" internal critics inside the House Democratic Caucus. "But her time has come and gone", Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-N.Y.) said Thursday on MSNBC.

As President Donald Trump celebrated Republican victories in two special congressional elections on Wednesday, one man who advised presidents from both parties warned the results "should be a wake-up call for Democrats" that Trump could be on his way to re-election in 2020.

Ryan, Pelosi's opponent last fall, said that Pelosi's continued role as the GOP's favorite bogeyman makes it "a heck of a lot harder" for Democrats as they try to notch victories in the GOP-friendly districts they will need to win next year. She praised Ossoff as "a candidate who was young and enthusiastic, and attracted national support".

In an appearance on "Fox & Friends" that aired on Friday, Trump said he would like Pelosi to stay right where she is because she has an "extraordinary record against her".

Democrats and others on the left are reading some interesting things into the GOP win of Georgia's 6th District. "People in OH don't grab me about Russian Federation at all when I'm home", Ryan said.

Throughout the campaign, Republicans ran attack ads against Pelosi, prompting some Democrats to say it is time for her to step aside, Politico reported. They pick people who are in safe and tough districts for Democrats to win.

"We showed the world that in places where no one thought it was possible, we could fight", Mr Ossoff told supporters.

Pelosi says the Democratic base is energized, adding, "We must now put forth our message".

I wrote yesterday about how the special counsel's investigation of President Trump now dominates the media and political culture.

"Nancy Pelosi was a great speaker".

Despite - or due to - raising and spending in excess of $30 million and receiving numerous celebrity endorsements, Ossoff dropped the ball in a district that Democrats had convinced themselves was winnable.
