In a separate hearing, former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson told the House Intelligence Committee that he had seen no evidence during his tenure that Russian Federation had manipulated the vote during the 2016 election, Fox News reports.

Jeh Johnson, the former head of the Homeland Security Department, told members of the House intelligence committee that because Trump "was predicting that the election was going to be rigged", the Obama administration was concerned that a public warning could end up challenging the election's integrity.

The testimony came a day after White House press secretary Sean Spicer said at a briefing he did not know whether President Donald Trump believes Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 presidential election. "Heaven knows there is no reason to not give the world's premier law enforcement agency, which is the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the evidence they may need to stop another attack from hurting someone else", he said on Fox News Channel's The Story after the hearing.

That led Trump to ask in two more Twitter comments, "Why did Democratic National Committee turn down the DHS offer to protect against hacks (long prior to election). At no point during my tenure at the DNC was I contacted by the FBI, DHS or any government agency, or alerted or made aware that they believed that the Russians, an enemy state, was intruding on our network".

In a third tweet Thursday, Trump sought to use Johnson's testimony as proof of his vindication in the Russian Federation investigation.

Samuel Liles, the Department of Homeland Security's acting director of the Office of Intelligence and Analysis Cyber Division, told the Senate panel that vote tallying mechanisms were not affected and that the hackers appeared to be scanning for vulnerabilities - which Liles likened to walking down the street and looking at homes to see who might be inside. 'I was not pleased, ' Johnson said.

Suggesting that the investigation into Russian hacking of US voting systems has only just begun, officials said on Wednesday that the extent of the hacking was much deeper than originally reported: Russian hackers were able to obtain and change voter information - and steal tens of thousands of voter records, including social security numbers. Trump has inconsistently said Russian Federation may or may not have been responsible for the hacking but has dismissed allegations that his associates colluded with Moscow as "fake news".

The President took to social media on Friday night to vent about Russian Federation hacking allegations that have been circulating even prior to his swearing in.

Clinton has blamed the disclosure of the emails on a daily basis as one reason for her election loss to Trump, although Johnson said he had no idea about their importance in analyzing the outcome.

Johnson said Comey would not take this lightly.
