Six die in Gulmarg cable auto accident


SRINAGAR, India A pine tree fell onto a cable vehicle in a ski resort in Indian Kashmir on Sunday, sending the auto plunging to earth and killing seven people, majority tourists, police said. It severed the lines and the cable auto plummeted to the ground, the official said.

The tree fell on the ropeway of Gulmarg Gondola and snapped it leading to the cable vehicle falling down.

"Seven persons including a couple and two children and a local were killed in the accident", a police officer said. Hundreds are people are said to be stranded due to the stoppage of cable vehicle service. More than 150 tourists including small kids are stranded in the Gondola, and were suffering from the breathing problem. He said the tree was uprooted due to strong winds. The Andraskar family lived in Shalimar Bagh in Delhi.

In a tragic incident, five tourists were killed when a tree fell on a ropeway in Jammu and Kashmir's Gulmarg.

He said the teen's death has prompted the entire community to rally and that the Muslim community is not alone in its grief. Sunday when, according to police , a "road rage" incident developed between a driver and bicyclists in the Muslim group.

The deceased included a family with two children and a local guide Mukhtar Ahmed.

According to reports, the tree fell due to high winds and is the first such incident on the Gulmarg cable vehicle service which began in 1998.

Gulmarg is the only ski resort in the restive Kashmir region, with tourists also visiting in the off-season for the views. The second phase of the cable auto was made operational in 2005. The two-stage cable vehicle lift ferries people to a height of 13,780 feet above the sea level.
