Doctor says Otto Warmbier has brain damage

Warmbier, 22, was released by North Korea on Tuesday and arrived at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center the same day.

Otto Warmbier, a University of Virginia student, was sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment after he allegedly removed a political propaganda poster at a hotel in Pyongyang, North Korea.

The most important diagnostic test conducted, doctors said, showed that Otto had extensive loss of brain tissue in all regions of the brain.

Warmbier can open his eyes and blink but has no signs of understanding language or responding to commands, Kanter said.

His father, Fred Warmbier, said the family was proud of Warmbier, calling him "a fighter".

The U.S. State Department said on June 15 that the release was negotiated by Joseph Yun, special envoy to North Korea.

The North Korean government said botulism is to blame for Warmbier's condition, but doctors haven't found any evidence of the illness in the now 22-year-old.

"There is no excuse for any civilized nation" to have kept his condition a secret, and denied him medical care for so long, ' he said. Warmbier's condition apparently deteriorated shortly after he was sentenced for subversion in March 2016.

The University of Virginia student was held in the country without any contact to the outside, sparking fears that he had died. It was kind, and it was, 'Are you taking care of yourself?' and 'We worked hard, and I'm sorry this is the outcome.' He told me a little bit about Secretary Tillerson and Joe Yun, and they teamed up and made things happen.

Otto Warmbier has been in a coma for over a year and is receiving medical treatment at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

"The results speak for themselves", Warmbier said.

Warmbier also revealed he and his wife were told by Obama administration officials not to hang ribbons representing Otto's captivity in their community because it would have been offensive to North Korean officials.

Before taking office, Trump called on the Obama administration to veto a United Nations resolution condemning the settlements.

The student's father also criticized the previous administration of Barack Obama for not having done more for their son.

Fred Warmbier said the same Thursday.

This is the Otto I know and love.

Warmbier's vital signs were stable upon arrival, Kanter said.

Warmbier, 22, a University of Virginia student from suburban Cincinnati, was medically evacuated to the United States on Wednesday.

On Thursday morning, Otto Warmbier's father, Fred Warmbier, thanked the community for helping with the burden of his family's ordeal.

The detentions have come at a time of heightened tension between North Korea and the U.S. and its regional neighbours.

In the wake of an American student succumbing to a coma while detained by North Korean authorities, the United States is mulling a possible legal prohibition on Americans traveling to North Korea.

"We do not see any skin indications that are strongly suggestive of mistreatment", he said.

Reuters reports that there have been 17 cases of USA tourists being detained in North Korea in the past decade.

"I call on them to release the other Americans being held", he urged, referring to three U.S. citizens still in North Korea.

Doctors indicate that Otto Warmbier's current state is consistent with the aftermath of cardiopulmonary arrest that deprives the brain of blood.
