Christie encouraged court reviewing betting case

The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the New Jersey law a year ago, ruling that the law violated the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 that forbids state-authorized sports gambling. He was born through artificial insemination.

"This office is committed to interpreting state statute and following decisions from the nation's highest court, " she said.

The NFL remains publicly opposed to legalized sports betting, but league owners recently approved the Oakland Raiders' proposed relocation to Las Vegas, one of the few venues that now allows for legal sports betting.

He says it's too early to declare victory, but that he's encouraged by the court's decision to hear the case.

In Arizona, Kimberly McLaughlin is appealing. Emphasizing their non-violent offenses and light sentences, they argued the law violates their right to keep and bear arms under the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment.

"Paternity and parenting aren't synonyms", attorney Keith Berkshire told the Arizona Supreme Court. Colorado is one of 21 states which have anti-discrimination laws based on sexual orientation. "He simply believes that only marriage between a man and a woman should be celebrated", his lawyers wrote in the petition asking the court to take the case.

Arizona Supreme Court justices struggled with that interpretation.

Colorado is one of the states whose laws protect gay couples, and Jack Phillips, the owner of the Masterpiece Cakeshop in Lakewood, Colo., was charged with violating it.

The couples sued, but the Arkansas Supreme Court ruled in the state's favor. "Masterpiece does not convey a message supporting same-sex marriages merely by abiding by the law and serving its customers equally", the court said.

Attorneys for the men, in a 50-page reply to the Supreme Court petition by then-U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch's office, held the men were not unsafe, that "the Government could not carry its burden in either district court" and that, "Given the complete lack of relevant evidence" the 3rd Circuit "had no choice but to affirm".

The families in this case were represented by the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) which had called the state's actions 'blatant discrimination'.

"When a statute has a term ... that unconstitutionally excludes a group of people, then those two choices are you either strike it in its entirety or invalidate the unconstitutional exclusion", Minter said. "Wouldn't you be left with a very freakish statute talking about biology in one instance and marital presumptions in another?"

In 2014, the Garden State repealed all of its prohibitions on gambling - having been unsuccessful with its first attempt, the 2012 Sports Wagering Law.

New Jersey appealed the second case to the Supreme Court, and in January, the court unexpectedly asked the USA solicitor general to weigh in.

Christie said Tuesday in Trenton at an unrelated event that he was encouraged by the court's decision to take the case up.
