Flight delayed after woman tosses coins into engine

A SENIOR female passenger threw some coins into the aircraft's engine before boarding a China Southern Airlines flight, which delayed the flight for over four hours at the Pudong International Airport.

The 80-year-old stopped on the tarmac to make "blessings" as she was boarding her Guangzhou-bound flight and then threw nine coins into the engine turbine, according to the Independent.

The woman was later detained by police, the airline said.

Police were called to Shanghai Pudong International Airport after a passenger noticed the woman's freaky behaviour, apparently aimed at ensuring a safe flight, and alerted authorities.

Nine coins were found in the engine, with the captain warning they could have caused engine failure.

Other passengers, who saw what happened, alerted airline staff. Eight of the coins missed their mark, but the last one lodged itself inside one of the engines.

Police later shared their findings, which amounted to a single coin with the value of about 1.7 yuan.

Fellow passengers said on Weibo that the woman had thrown the coins at the plane's engine in order to "pray for a safe flight". "According to Qiu's neighbour, Qiu believes in Buddhism", the police said.

It is not yet clear whether the airline will be taking any further action against the woman, but an investigation into the incident is still underway, The Independent reported.

News of the incident spread on Weibo with one user commenting "Grandma, this is not a wish fountain with turtles".
