South Africa bans sale of live hens to contain bird flu

Western Cape government officials will be discussing the impact of an outbreak of bird flu.

The Avian influenza outbreak in some parts of South Africa like Mpumalanga and the Free State has resulted in Zimbabwe banning chicken imports from the country.

Exports of processed poultry products, live chickens and fresh produce will continue depending on the requirements of importing countries, the department of agriculture said in a statement. They include eggs, both for table and for hatching, frozen full-boned meat, as well as mechanically de-boned chicken. In 2016‚ Zimbabwe imported chicken products worth R22.4 million.

A day before the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) stated on its website a reported case of the deadly bird flu virus on a commercial poultry farm in Mpumalanga Province.

They will reallow the import of poultry products from South Africa when the veterinary department of the country will report that the avian flu outbreak is over.

"The farm has been placed under quarantine and over 25‚000 of the infected birds will be culled".

The ban will be active for an indefinite period.

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has banned the sale of live hens to avoid the spread of the contagious H5N8 avian flu. "We have put this measure in place to prevent further unintended spread of the influenza", department spokesperson Bomikazi Molapo said. Farmers who suspect infection in their poultry should notify the local State Vet office or Extension officer who will visit the farm, investigate the incident and collect samples from the birds to rule out the disease.
