Messi expresses optimism for upcoming season under new manager

Lionel Messi believes that the "good reputation" of new Barcelona head coach Ernesto Valverde bodes well ahead of the 2017-18 season.

However, the Argentinian didn't enjoy the same success on a team level, only lifting the Copa del Rey during Luis Enrique's final campaign at the Camp Nou.

Messi, who has turned 30, married long-term partner Antonella Roccuzzo and agreed to sign a new contract since the end of last season, hopes the impressive reputation of the former Athletic Bilbao boss will prove to be true as his attention moves to 2017-18.

"I am pinning my hopes on a new direction and hoping we can do our best", Messi told a news conference to promote Barcelona's tie-up with e-commerce giant Rakuten Inc.

"We're all starting from zero again, with a new coach whose way of working we don't yet know, but we do know that he's a great manager because of what he's done with his other teams".

Chelsea look set to beat Juventus to Brazilian defender
Chelsea close on the signing of Real Madrid right-back Danilo after agreeing a £31m deal for the 25-year-old, according to a report.

Neymar added: "I agree with Arda but I don't personally know the new coach, I have heard lots of good things about him".

"Whenever I start a new season there is a very clear-cut goal - that FC Barcelona will do its best".

"When we face we try to defend our colours and when we go with the Spanish national team we fight together". A suggestion which has also been approved by Neymar - and fellow senior player Gerard Pique. "We have the same values, the same philosophy, Futbol Club Barcelona and Rakuten, and I think that we have the same thoughts about not just playing, but having fun".

The Argentina worldwide has enjoyed an extended break after getting married and he admits that he is looking forward to learning how Valverde works.
