Families distraught as Flint funeral home shuts down over maggots, rotting bodies

State inspectors say when they entered a garage at the Swanson Funeral Home in Flint they immediately saw maggots on the garage door. A list of violations can be found in the "Related Information" section of this story.

The license of manager O'Neil Swanson II also was suspended.

During an inspection in May of this year, authorities discovered maggots and several bodies inside cardboard cremation containers in a garage that was not air-conditioned.

The building smelled of decomposing bodies. The preparation room at Swanson Funeral Home was deemed "unsanitary" by LARA in September 2016.

Swanson Funeral Home is known for providing residents of Flint, Mich., affordable cremation services.

The owner of Swanson Funeral Homes in Detroit and Pontiac released a statement saying he is shocked by the allegations, but has no business or legal connection to the Flint business.

Swartz Funeral Home in Genesee County's Mundy Township responded to help. Only one of the bodies had been embalmed, though all of them had been at the funeral home for more than 72 hours.

In 2012, the Michigan Occupational Health and Safety Administration alleged that employees at the funeral home were conducting work without utilizing protective gear, and they were exposing themselves to the deceased's bodily fluids.

The funeral home could face up to $10,000 in fines for each violation.

"It is significant, in our eyes, that MI residents be able to trust their providers and to trust the establishment that they are following the law, especially when it comes to the death of a loved one - this is a very traumatic time for individuals", Dale said.

The funeral home is located on Martin Luther King Avenue in Flint, which is about 75 miles north of Detroit.
