Gold Cup 2017: Bashing coach Bruce Arena amid USMNT struggles misses point

Full credit to Panama in this game, who went up against one of the pre-tournament favorites and did what they did last time these teams played in the Gold Cup - tied 1-1 (Panama won the resulting penalty shootout in the 2015 Gold Cup 3rd-place game, to finish ahead of the USMNT).

The Panama players fought to a draw July 8 vs. the U.S. G Jose Calderon has the stuff to fight back the furious Gold Cup offense of Nicaragua.

The U.S. Men's National Team utilized a brace from Jordan Morris and single strike from Omar Gonzalez to earn a wild 3-2 victory against Martinique in its second match of the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup in front of 23,368 fans at Raymond James Stadium.

Next on the Schedule: The U.S. MNT moves on to its 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup Group B finale when it facesNicaragua for the first time on Saturday, July 15 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Martinique pulled a goal back two minutes later when Kevin Parsemain scored.

But like Acosta and Dwyer, who became the 10th player to score in each of his first two global appearances for the national team, Arena expects the squad to improve as the tournament progresses. The U.S. has been to four Confederations Cups, most recently finishing second to Brazil in 2009.

Arena made a significant amount of changes in the lineup for the Martinique game, and he will surely rotate heavily once more for the final group game against Nicaragua.

Martinique defender Jordy Delem is a teammate of USA forward Jordan Morris and midfielder Cristian Roldan with Major League Soccer's Seattle Sounders FC. Ultimately, it's better to have a player who is involved and who gives you consistent effort and tenacity over players who may not make as many bad plays but who also don't make the kind of game-changing positive plays that Zardes can provide.

Was it a C Team? The United States improved its possession from its opening tie against Panama, but that was to be expected against an underdog Martinique team.

But that's not what happened.

35th minute, 0-0: Gyasi Zardes sends in another great cross and the ball is deflected out for a fifth US corner. The Americans took 21 shots, 10 shots on goal.

Two minutes passed, and Gyasi Zardes crossed from the left flank to Morris, who smashed an eight-yarder into the top right corner. His shot was saved by Guzan, but Parsemain's follow up took a big deflection and floated in.

Only Brad Guzan, Gonzalez and Kellyn Acosta retained their starting spots.

Stephane Abaul came within a foot or so of at the 42nd-minute mark when he leapt to meet Sebastien Cretinoir's cross but his header flew a few feet past the far post.

If Martinique defeats Panama: The U.S. just would need to beat Nicaragua.

48th minute, 0-0: Paul Arriola hits the crossbar from six yards out!

Except that I could barely force myself to watch spurts of it (It would have helped in the USA or Japan [another country I have lived in] had qualified for the tournament). "We want Dom!" around the 50-minute mark-a cry for Dom Dwyer, who has proved tidy with his opportunities over the last two matches.
