Sammy Sosa: Facial cream caused lightening of skin

Sammy Sosa: Facial cream caused lightening of skin

Although the trend is rarely discussed openly in the USA, skin whitening is a booming business in other countries where lighter skin tones are hailed as a beauty must-have sparked by years of colorism, racism and ideals of lighter complexions being more attractive.

In 2009, during an interview on Univision's Primer Impacto program, Sosa admitted to using a "bleaching cream", saying that he'd "apply before going to bed", and that it "whitens my skin some". "I'm not a racist, I live my life happily".

Sosa has had to explain his lighter complextion in the past, but a recent interview has fans more concerned. After a still from that clip hit the internet, Twitter kept its foot on Sosa's neck, going ham on Sosa's complexion in the recording (that outfit certainly didn't help). "It's a cream that I have, that I use to soften [my skin], but has bleached me some. I don't think I look like Michael Jackson", he added.

The owners saw an ice cream shop in Florida serving it this way and thought it was a great business idea. Americans are the biggest ice cream consumers in the world, eating approximately 48 pints every year.

Many people have gone on social media to try to get the skinny on Sosa's new look, using the brutal, no-holds-barred approach you'd expect.

Sosa, who racked up 609 home runs over his illustrious Major League Baseball career, is apparently still applying that bleaching cream as his pigmentation has been altered even more over the past few years.

Sosa didn't reenter the spotlight a year ago even though the Cubs, for whom he played from 1992 to 2004, won their first World Series title since 1908.
