Truck carrying eels overturns on OR highway, resulting in slimy mess

Slippery "snot snakes" created quite a mess for the Oregon State Police on Thursday after a truck carrying a batch of slime eels was overturned near milepost 131 on Highway 101, on the Oregon Coast due west of Salem.

- Hundreds of eels were seen slithering over a road following a wreck in Gleneden Bay, Oregon on U.S. Highway 101.

Police said Salvatore Tragale was driving north with 13 containers holding 7,500 pounds (3,402 kilograms) of hagfish, which are commonly known as slime eels.

The Depoe Bay Fire Department helped with the cleanup, which had the highway back open by 4:30 p.m. They were being transported to overseas markets, OR police say.

One of the containers came off the truck bed and flew across the highway into the oncoming lane, other containers fell onto the roadway.

Witness Erin Butler told FOX 12 the scene was unbelievable.

When the container struck the oncoming vehicle, it caused a chain-reaction, pushing four vehicles into eachother.

"We were like, 'What is that?' And then you realize, 'The poor eels.' They were writhing and slimy, and it was unbelievable, just unbelievable", she said.

Only minor injuries reported from first vehicle.

"When Hagfish become stressed, they secrete a slime", Boyd said.
